yes , but there was at one point where a young progressive painter , started to paint "depth" & perspective ...
...things had been pretty two-dimensional before then. It was considered a great leap forward and everyone started to copy...artists then had three deminsions to play with.
The ancient greeks "saw" that the world was round , and even measured it . But there was a kind of clamp of fear that was put on the minds of people prior to the rennaissance by the clergy of imagining such things. there were things you were not allowed to percieve or paint, even if you had the oils.
There be dragons and monsters , and you didn't venture beyond.
(Why was Mona Lisa smiling , cause maybe she sensed the secret of Michaelangelo's homosexuality ? Shhhhhhh!)
Interesting thing about relgious art , is that Jesus was first painted more often for centuries as a shepard , it was later he is painted on the cross and the emphasis shifted to the sacrifice and crucifiction....and the saving grace.
With changes in theology and outlook , was reflected in composition of art...glorification of the Savior was prevalent for so long , where Islam came along & strictly forbade the same. ( but had amazing stained glass and tiles)
Men and their theologies always leading to their rivalries , who has the more real view... yet always the same heart, in the end , in art.
I want to know more about all those little angels floating around up there !
