Christopher, they were gross jokes. I ask you to believe me that X, Steven, Janice Shell, maybe Rambi, and others who engaged in the tasteless and entirely unfunny (to me) cannibalism jokes were joking. Something about Barbacoa or something like that was mentioned. Those g's are frequently used to clue in people who are likely not to get it. They were talking to among themselves, and knew the g's weren't necessary. If you conclude from those jokes that X really wants to murder and eat her neighbors, then she has surely been successfully demonized here.
X opposes the death penalty. Fairness considerations. Aka justice, i'd say.
Even if she had been, before she rethought, serious about the 30%, which she wasn't (she was being angry and bitter over a crime that a family member was the victim of), that would not represent a "distaste" for justice, you know perfectly well. It would more likely represent a determination to get some of it, whatever the cost. It was mistaken and foolish and bitter and angry at what happened in her family, and is not her view.
The idea that someone would accuse me, because I am an atheist (X is not; she is an agnostic) of having a "distaste" for "human values" is bizarre to me.
Even if I disagree with that 'human value,' theism, or maybe I should say even if i think it is in error, i have no 'distaste' for it; though i do for some of what has been done in the name of religion, as do you, and i will never be able to quite forget the frightening hating expressions on the faces of the Christian children who tormented my sister and me and Joey the Jew in Charlotte, North Carolina when we were children. And the snide cracks of some of their parents to us two terribly shy little girls. Nice.
I have from time to time envied those who could believe that when unbearable tragedy struck it had meaning, and was the will of a beneficent God.
You can, of course, decide that anyone who isn't religious has a distaste for human values. But that would be a function of the way you think, and it would hardly be honest to assert on SI that I had "repeatedly mentioned my distaste for human values" because we disagree about the existence of a God.
I believe you have shown no post in which X has mentioned her distaste for any of those things. |
