To Essam, bev and all,

1- You "borrow" stock.
2- You sell it
3- You buy it back
4-Your broker returns it to the owner.

The only trade is your sell/buy

There is no way to identify a short sale looking at the trading.
A cross is a transfer of stock from the house to a house client or from a client to another client at a pre-arranged price. The reasons for this can be many. I know for a fact where one fund transferred stock from one fund in it's family to another fund. Since it was a transfer between two legal entities, it had to go through the markets (cross).

Later.
