re: The FT/DI CDMA Twist?

<< "Ericsson repented and apologized, said Ira Brodsky, president of Datacomm Research." >>

This goes Ira one better.

The restructuring of Ericsson that includes 5 business units - Mobile Systems, WCDMA and GSM; Multi-Service Networks and Data Backbone; Mobile Systems CDMA; Transmission and Transport; and Global Services - becomes "Ericsson has now given up the focus on WCDMA and will focus on the US standard which is expected to become dominant world-wide while Nokia continues to focus on WCDMA", at least in the eyes of FT (or perhaps the Dagens Industri abstract of same).

Now that is an interesting interpretation. I wonder if Einar Lindquist, (head of the W-CDMA and GSM mobile systems unit) knows this.

Since Ericsson is also restructuring its markets organisation to create units focusing on five large global customers: Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Telefonica and Telecom Italia Mobile, I guess they must all be planning to use cdma2000 on GSM MAP, eh?

>> Ericsson Switches Its Focus To CDMA

Dagens Industri/FT Information via COMTEX

Ericsson, the Swedish telecommunications and electronics company, is planning to increase its market share to 20 per cent within the area of CDMA mobile telephone systems as the company abandons its ambition to find a solution for the third generation mobile telephone network. CDMA2000 is a 3G standard and Kurt Hellstrom, Ericsson's managing director, recently revealed that the company will focus on this area.

Mr Hellstrom said one month ago that interest has increased as a consequence of Ericsson's success in China together with China Unicom, the Chinese mobile telephone operator. CDMA2000 is developed by US companies while WCDMA is developed by Ericsson and its Finnish competitor, Nokia. Ericsson has now given up the focus on WCDMA and will focus on the US standard which is expected to become dominant world-wide while Nokia continues to focus on WCDMA.

Abstracted from Dagens Industri <<

BTW: Nothing I've found on FT matches up with this twist.
