Having over 2 million ZIP drives out there is certainly a force that will have an impact on the LS-120. But remember, Syquest was the de-facto standard and had over 2 milion drives out there when the ZIP was first announced. Now analysts are predicting bankruptcy by August 15th.

Regarding Compaq's comments on conceding the commercial marketplace to ZIP:

What else could they say, it's true (for now). What they've done here is to separate the ZIP from the LS-120, by marketplace. By doing this, they have not alienated the ZIP consumer. They need ZIP fans to be willing to accept the LS-120 alternative at work because of the floppy compatiability issue. They will not challenge the ZIP in the consumer marketplace at this time, to do so would be futile. They do know however, that if the LS-120 becomes a commercial success, then marketing to the consumer will not be difficult. If I recall, when Iomega first began selling the ZIP, they said they had no intention of trying to replace the floppy drive. What companies say and what they actually do are often two different animals.
