Van Eyck painting is awesome...great detail it was meant to scare the bejesus out of the illiterates-(hell anyone that believes) and inspire hope beyond their dismal lives like the work of Giotto at Padua mystudios.com I don't know where I can find on-line the part of the frescoe of the Last Judgement where ... I just found it in the same site-- the pictures on the main page can be viewed in greater detail mystudios.com and the lower right corner with Satan-- you still cannot see him very good but Giotto has him (satan) how would you say-- excreting a sinner--besides torture and various maladies carried out on the damned-- now thats vivid and that was in the 1300's-- got a book describing the history of hell and doom and gloom-- good stuff-- mainly on Christainity's version of hell which is more chaotic than Hindu many levels of hell and Buddism's thousand levels and even egyptian times with their book of the dead has similarities... must be universal to fear what would happen to oneself being considered bad, naughty or vile-- makes good paintings though.
