Peach, A true Austin original has played his last gig. I've seen Mambo in many bands over the years and he was always fantastic..any style..any time Then there was his penchant for wearing hats he made out of roadkill. My fav was the skunk cool guy too...very cool He got tons of attention playing his washboard with many many bands, but I remember the first time I saw "Mr. Fabulous and Casino Royale", a lounge/bigband type show with a frontman who coulda given Sinatra a run..they do BObby Darin, Sinatra, Deano, Tom Jones, etc...anyway Mambo was the drummer for the first few months in that band. I'd never seen him play bigband stuff..needless to say I was blown away. I went to the MAMBO tribute at Antones last month knowing it would be the last time I saw him play..it was fantastic. He was tiring and leaning back on the wall as he played at times but he never missed a beat. I was tearing up when Lostgirl and I left the building.............. RIP MAMBO John..a true original austin360.com
