Re: There is something more to this than the news story suggests.

Maybe they're just helping out Fujitsu.

Gresham is more of a compus complex than a single FAB, total capacity when the current expansion is complete is 30,000 WPW (about 5 times the size of Dresden) but part of that capacity is lower quality clean room suitable only for commodity flash, part is high quality 8" wafer clean room space similar to Dresden, and part is supposed to be used for 300mm (12" wafer) lines to be brought up next year (scheduled to go 12" in 2002).

AMD could be planning just about anything at Gresham (including .09 copper SOI on 300mm wafers for next year), or they could just be helping out Fujitsu by lending extra support to the joint venture, or something in between (some extra capacity for Athlons, perhaps).

Bottom line is, half of Gresham equals more capacity in WPW than Austin and Dresden combined, and could provide a huge increase in FAB capability for AMD next year.

If SOI really is a benefit, AMD could be getting ready to make a move for >50% market share next year.
