L M Ericsson gave up their belief in one standard when they capitulated and bought QUALCOMM's infrastructure business. For the past 3 years, they have been pursuing 'all flavours'. So, it can't be correct that they are suddenly pursuing 'all flavours'. Or maybe that was just somebody who was repeating old news from early 1999 or informing somebody who didn't know that Ericsson totally reversed themselves way back in early 1999 after years of misinformation and slime. I therefore conclude that they are about to make a break for volume sales of cdma2000 to head Nokia off at the pass. I suspect the VW40 game is almost up. Yes, I know QUALCOMM is working flat out on W-CDMA and will probably make it work. But Irwin Jacobs says W-CDMA will not be ready until 2004 and he doesn't mean just the QUALCOMM version. I suppose W-CDMA will morph into a synchronous version and perhaps in other ways more closely resemble cdma2000. But maybe it's game over for VW40 and there is not enough merit and too much urgency to wait until 2004. Perhaps we are seeing a strategic move by Ericsson to embrace the enemy totally and defeat their erstwhile VW40 GG [GSM Guild] buddies. We know VW40 was mostly a charade to prolong the life of GSM sales and the huge profits the guild members enjoyed. But at some stage, ranks must break and they must get as much cdma2000 business as they can. By busting open the VW40 and calling an end to it, if Ericsson has got cdma2000 positioned and ready to roll in quantity, they would be better off to bring down the curtain on W-CDMA and go like hell on cdma2000. Nokia is flat-footed and wouldn't know what the hell to do! Service providers and everyone [poor Doh!CoMo] would grab cdma2000 with both hands. The long, long slow part of the bike race would be over and the sprint for the market finishing line would be fast and furious. Those lagging at the back will miss out. That's my theory and hope.
