I saw a heartening display of the concerns of some powerful figures representing American softwood consumers and distributors today on a live program from Victoria broadcast late this morning on BCTV. I've been trying to find a reference to it on the net but no luck. It may be replayed in part locally later today. I really hope they receive the widest possible publicity of their clear message, particularly in the States. They seem to have put together a road show. You've no doubt heard about their visit by now. This is just a bit of an update for anyone who is interested. They've come up to talk with Premier Gordon Campbell to encourage us to keep up the fight and hopefully they'll help us from the other side of the border to bring common sense into this. They've had enough of restrictions and are willing to make their point. They too have been fighting this protectionism for the few at the expense of the many for a long time. Basically, the content of their message was this: the tariff will hurt Americans. I believe it was either the present or future chairman of the "National Association of Homebuilders" navigation.helper.realnames.com who said that, "All softwood lumber is not created equal" and pointed to the fact that in his home state of Mississippi their yellow pine is not suitable for studding because of warpage problems. They stressed the fact that they want and need access to our softwood unfettered by the Bush administration. They were accompanied by senior management of Home Depot and a couple of other highly credible representatives of the US softwood users. The claim was made that the gentlemen on the stage represented the users of about 95% of the softwood lumber bought in the States. It's gratifying to know that they are on our side as well as the good folks in one of the links you gave earlier acah.org as well as many others. Doesn't Bush see himself as being just a trifle hypocritical in pounding nails and raising walls ostensibly for the disadvantaged but really for the cameras? It's backfiring on ya Dubya. Who's advising this guy? Meanwhile, our guy, Chretien, has been shooting from the hip with a little salvo of his own for which he is now having to answer to Ralph Klein: tvforbc.com And, of course, Pettigrew is off to try to expedite things at the WTO. It's great to see some common sense prevailing (well, maybe not so much from the politicians) and the ultimate thwarting of the FOs drawing closer. What we really need now is the unmasking and pillorying of the villains. Ah yes, I look forward to the time when this is all in the past and softwood is merely an oxymoron used to describe aging porn stars. But, in the meanwhile, my son-in-law is out of his logging job and trying to find a job as a salesman. He's got a wife and three growing boys to feed. I doubt that there is a family in BC that hasn't already been affected. One of the American gentlemen in the common sense posse today owns a world wide pallet business. He described how his extra costs could ultimately be passed along to every consumer in the world who buys shipped goods. Enough is clearly enough. Happy Trials, Lenny
