Stcgg:

The federal debt is now declining, absolutely and as a percentage of GDP. Alan Greenspan has stated that retiring the federal debt too quickly would be a serious mistake, because of the dislocating effect on the credit markets. The world wants to buy US T-bonds/bills. The debt is no longer an issue.

The idea of a >>15-20 yr contraction (or depression) similar to the 1929-1949 era<< is WAY too pessimistic, imho.
