I just discovered this thread. I have an interest in Canadian banks, as a holder of TD, which I acquired in exchange for shares in Waterhouse. I have been very happy with TD stock price performance in last year or so, but have had a hard time following it, as I am located in the US.

One thing that I have wondered about is the possibility of takeovers or buyouts in the Canadian Bank sector. As I understand it, there is now some sort of law in Canada that would prevent a US bank, say, from purchashing one of the big 6 Canadian banks. Also I have heard talk that this law might change.

My questions to you or anyone else following this thread is: (1) What are the chances of a change in Canadian law to allow for foreigh ownership of Canadian Banks, like TD. (2) If such a move is likely, what is the potential timetable?, Finally, (3) what are the chances that Royal Bank, say, might make a bid to buy TD Bank. Reading their respective financial reports, it seems to me that this particular deal might make sense.

Any comments?
