Interestingly, I saw something the other day about improvements in transmission lines that could increase available electricity by about 6% without new generating capacity. Of course, how many trillions of dollars it would take to upgrade the grid is an important question. My point in the "OTOH" was simply that the case for coal seems, to some degree at least, to depend on continuing economic growth - a scenario you seem to believe highly unlikely.
