American Power Conversion Offers 'Back Door' Surge Protection From Harmful Power Traveling Through Coaxial Cable Lines
APC's New ProtectNet(TM)PV Cable Protector Offers Comprehensive Surge Protection for Coaxial Cable Lines Into Your Home or Business
biz.yahoo.com
WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Aug. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The same lightning and surge events that cause damaging utility line transients can also adversely affect the data cabling environment and its connected equipment. To address this reality, American Power Conversion (APC) announced today that it has expanded its line of ProtectNet(TM) surge protectors to include protection for coaxial cable lines. The new ProtectNet PV stand-alone device is designed to protect cable modems, televisions, VCRs, satellite/DSS control boxes and cable boxes from damaging surges caused by lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD) and faulty wiring.

``With the increased utilization of coaxial cable lines for cable modems, cable television and satellite connections, users need to be aware their computers, televisions and other electronic equipment are not completely protected by a single surge protector plugged into the electrical outlet,'' said Joe Loberti, general manager, APC Consumer Network Solutions Group. ``Protecting the data paths into your sensitive electronics is essential in maintaining the health, availability and functionality of your equipment. APC's ProtectNet family is designed to offer 'back door' protection for the variety of lines used to transmit data, now including coaxial cables.''

The ProtectNet family of products is available in three categories including Network, Telecommunication and Communication. Network units are designed to protect network interface cards, servers, hubs, routers and other local area network (LAN) equipment through network lines such as Ethernet, Token Ring, 10/100BaseT, and 10 Base2. Telecommunication units offer protection of traditional analog and ISDN lines for modems, fax machines and remote access servers.

Communication units are designed to safeguard serial and parallel ports attaching printers, zip drives and other peripherals, as well as coaxial and RJ45 connections communicating with point-of-sale (POS) and other computer equipment.

According to the Ethernet standard lists (IEEE 802.3), there are four electrical hazards networks are susceptible to during use:

-- Direct contact between local network components and power or lightning
circuits;
-- Static charge build-up on local network cables and components;
-- High-energy transients coupled onto the local network cabling system
(those induced by other cables that are installed in the general
proximity of network cables); and
-- Potential voltage differences between safety grounds to which various
network components are connected (such as the slight differences which
may be found in safety grounds from one building to another).

APC's new ProtectNet PV safeguards equipment from all of these damaging electrical hazards. The unit is currently available in North America for an estimated resale price of $30.00. All units feature a lifetime product warranty.
