Oxford GlycoSciences Granted Proteomics Patent In US

LONDON -- Oxford GlycoSciences PLC (OGSI), or OGS, said Wednesday it has been granted a patent in the U.S. for its high-throughput proteomics method.

The company which develops pharmaceuticals through proteomics - the science of proteins and how they interact and affect the body- said it had obtained U.S. Patent No. 6,278,794, entitled "Computer-Assisted Isolation and Characterization of Proteins."

The company said that the patent relates to methods and apparatus for computer-assisted selection and robotic isolation of proteins following two-dimensional separation.

OGS added that the patent also covers the use of a laboratory information management system to track samples and results obtained from proteomic analysis.

The patent covers more specific intellectual property protection for OGS' proteomics technology than the coverage offered by the more general U.S. Patent No. 6,064,754, which was issued in May 2000, the company added.
