An unrepentant racist, homophobe, and friend to right-wing dictators and terrorists who failed, during a career stretching 30 years, to improve the lives of his own constituents. That is the man whom both the mainstream and right-wing media celebrate as the living, breathing symbol of “conservatism.” Liberals couldn’t have invented a better one and it is they, not the more sophisticated right-wing political operators that Helms helped spawn, who will miss him most."
