I can't say if this is "the bottom" but I agree with your thinking. I bought a new system last Month for the reasons you stated and am glad I did. After I got the new system up and running I became aware of something referred to as spyware and how it can bog down your Internet connection. I found out about Ad-aware and tried it on my old system and it really helped speed it up a great deal. Maybe it will help you until you take the plunge.
