>Ice - Your place sounds like a piece of paradise! Lots of wonderful critters, but I notice that you didn't mention coyotes. You gotta have out there too, right? OH man, spooky -- just typed the word and they started hollin' and now the dog is cranked up too.
Jack,
Yes, I forgot to mention coyotes. We occasionally hear them off in the distance, but none in the past few months.
Talk about "spooky", and your dog being "cranked up" as you mentioned - - let me bounce this off you to see what you think...
I have 3 cocker spaniels. Once a day, or at least every-other day, normally between about 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., all three of them all-of-a-sudden start howling in unison for about 20 seconds. They point their noses straight up in the air and howl--not bark. Then they all 3 immediately stop howling at the same time - within about 1-2 seconds of each other. It's like something sets them off - something hurts their ears - something they are hearing [we assume] that my wife and I can't hear. We can't figure out what it could possibly be. Any ideas?
I know dogs can hear frequencies we can't hear - I think in the higher frequency ranges - but we're at a total loss as to an explanation for what might be causing their howling. It's most disturbing, not only to the dogs, but it wakes us up. We've been unable to solve this problem, and it's been going on for the past 2-3 years. We could hire someone to identify the frequency, but from what I've heard, it would be very expensive, time-consuming, and possibly inconclusive to do.
On another "spooky" note, see if you know anything about what this might have been...
I was looking out the kitchen window one day at the birds at our bird feeder. Something caught my eye in the background. It was a fast-moving cold-black snake that was approximately 6-8 inches in diameter and about 20-30 feet long. I mean, the thing was big and fast-moving! It disappeared into a large cactus plant, and I haven't seen it since. What type of snake could be that big, that black, and that fast-moving? And head directly into a cactus plant and disappear? I don't know.
There are so many critters around here that my wife and I bought binoculars to catch the action. Not just any ole binoculars, but Swarovskis - one for her [black], and one for me [green]. The view through them is absolutely magnificent! The lenses are crystal clear and let in lots of light - a sign of high optic quality. It's awesome what one can see through them! The more I sit back and simply observe, the more I'm amazed at what can be found on my one little acre. I can't begin to imagine your - - 40.
>Nature, ya gotta love it! I'll take any part of it over the city any day
Yes, but I can also find lots of things in the city to point my binoculars toward! Know what I mean? <g>
