Larry, Globalstar is right on schedule [even a bit ahead]. They were always only going to offer service in 1999, but with preliminary service in late 1998. 40 satellites is nearly the full constellation [48 total plus some spares]. Yes, Iridium should be able to pretty well fill up even before Globalstar is ready to go - but maybe customers won't respond as quickly as I think.

Iridium is several months behind schedule; they were originally going to be about a year ahead.

Well, if there are technical glitches, I'd rather have the Globalstar system to fix, because they can't fix gremlins in space! Unless they are software ones and they can radio new software to the satellites.

Where was the article please? Both Iridium and Globalstar have done good work in sticking to schedule after 10 years in the development stages.
