Budget surplus is dwindling
Bush defends tax cuts, tells Congress to limit spending
The sharp downward revision in the federal budget surplus estimate could make it hard for President Bush to pursue programs like national missile defense, reports NBC’s Campbell Brown.

MSNBC STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
Aug. 22 — The once-ballyhooed federal budget surplus has all but vanished, if Social Security revenues are not included, according to a new administration estimate issued Wednesday. The new figures add fuel to Democratic charges that President Bush’s 10-year, $1.35 trillion tax cut is squandering the surplus. (These idiots make me want to scream) Bush defended the tax cut and pledged not to use Social Security funds to pay for current spending needs, but he also warned Congress he will veto budget-busting bills.

THEY WILL JUST SPEND IT!!!!!!!!
In addition the OMB contended “the largest single factor reducing the 2001 surplus was the extraordinary increase in spending, $50 billion over FY 2000 levels, enacted in last December’s appropriations bills.”
