Liberal-moderate Republicans ARE switching parties.
Jeffords did and others have or will. Meanwhile Nader Democrats are back with the party and plenty ashamed of themselves and teed off. Nader is finished now.

Most liberal-moderate Republicans are now feeling malaise. I've spoken to a few. They thought Bush would be a moderate because his father used to be (before joining Reagan and his "revolution") and moving full-time to Texas where he feasted on oil money.

Yes he was an oilman but Bush used to be from Yankee liberal Connecticut remember? Liberal-moderate Republicans now feel guilty (and increasingly angry) about having supported Bush (which they did during the election) because some have very strong feelings about environmental protection, that is the main issue with them. Others are too much power given to Texas energy companies and other corporate interests Bush is clearly favoring over any consumer interests. Particularly in northern states - Michigan east - these real compassionate Republicans may doom Bush and the right-wing in coming elections. Many of them will not make the same mistake twice. While wanting to be loyal to their party, they prefer the McCain-Jeffords-Democrat positions over Bush's. That is why Bush is trying to hard to APPEAR moderate lately though his policies haven't reflected this at all, nor his appointments. I would estimate about 20% of Republicans are "McCain/Jeffords Republicans". Bush has all but ignored this party of his party until very recently. He will pay the price in the future. The only hope Bush has of appeasing them would be to drop Cheney and his pro-energy anti-environment policy. Not gonna happen though.

Once this Condit story goes away the nation can get back to the real story/debate which is why Bush must be fought and next time must go. In the meantime, the Senate will do its best to hold down the fort for the majority views of this country.
