I agree. My gosh, if Cisco has managers with 0 or 1 report, you bet it's time to get rid of the fat. Managers are an expensive way to spend money and options. I'd much rather have a top performing PM report to me than have several managers that stay on the high-level strategy end of getting the work done. That's saying alot coming from an old hand consulting guy like me. :) In my opinion, you only hire managers after the business is straining from growth and you have no choice but to hire them. You don't hire managers in anticipation of growth to come. I think that's what Cisco did. They hired a zillion people in the last two years in anticipation of alot of growth that didn't materialize. Time to chop the fat and I'm glad to see they're doing it.
