There's another issue we haven't addressed. A very good argument can be made, in fact has been made, that true hate on the basis of race, sex, etc--that is, hating a person not because they individually have done a damn thing to us, but because they belong to some group-- is a form of mental sickness. If this is true, what hate crimes legislation actually does is punish people for being sick.
