Clinton lining up subcontractors for big book job:

NEW YORK (AP) -- President Clinton has recruited Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Taylor Branch to help with the writing of his memoirs, the Daily News reported Friday.

Branch, a friend of Clinton's, won the Pulitzer in 1989 for "Parting the Waters," on the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement. The Daily News cited unidentified sources in report.

Clinton has agreed to terms with Alfred A. Knopf on a deal worth a reported $10 million, the highest ever for a nonfiction book.

Clinton's literary representative, Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, has said that the former president would write the memoir himself but would have "plenty" of research assistance. Barnett said Clinton already has written an outline and worked out much of the book in his head.

Barnett was out of the country Friday and did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press. Calls to Knopf also were not immediately returned.
