. And since we are our behavior, if we act civilly we will be civil- at least while we are engaged in that action.

I don't keep up with the latest in the field of psychology, but I have a general sense that psychoanalysis has gone out of style. I'm a naturally introspective person, but have been really impressed by how quickly and easily behavior modification can do the job. I can imagine it's even more appropriate for people who aren't introspective.

I don't see why the behaviorist approach can't work with improving the quality of our society. I don't know how you get people to respect one another as people. But you can sure get them to act respectful by changing their behavior. And the change of behavior can actually change the underlying attitude, from what I hear. I think that if I were ever to visit a shrink, I'd go to a cognitive therapist. We are what we think.

One of the reasons why this has gained in popularity is that it's faster and cheaper and spending years in analysis. That alone makes it worth a try.

The "moral crisis" seems to me to be similar and that changing behavior would be both quicker and cheaper than a long national search to find our moral compass and get everybody on board. Actually, we could take both paths concurrently and they would reinforce each other.

I don't understand why this notion fell so flat on the BR. I'm cautious about taking up a topic here that started there, but since that thread has written it off, it would seem to be fair game here.
