I would like to see first world companies manage the issue of intellectual property rights and third world countries in the same way that software companies manage the issue of software piracy among college students. Students rip software. Everybody knows it. It happens all the time, and millions of copies are involved. Nobody moves to enforce the law, though, because the companies know damned well that the kids are getting hooked, and when they grow up, they will pay, and pay, and pay.

If developing countries cannot afford what they desperately need, just turn a blind eye and let them have it cheap (the Brazilian companies do pay royalties). We have a strong vested interest in promoting their development: when they "grow up", they will be very good customers.

Besides, watching people die because they couldn't afford medicine kind of sticks in the throat. I imagine that it would stick in the throat of any principled person.
