You R absolutly right about this. There is no major highway ssystem in China, eventhough the government started high construction rescently. The most easy way and reliable way of travelling between cities is the rail system.
If you travel inside city, bus ticket will be anywhere from 2c~10c. The minivan (Served a better transportation compare to bus) cause about 20c~80c per ride. For taxi, 20c~$1.2/mile is very reasonable
range. But bear in mind, Chinese city is very crowded. You can't drive fast even the road mostly fine. It's common for a cab driver to earning $1000~1500 per month(exclude gas expense). That translated to average of $30~40 of earning each day. However, sometime people can earn $2000 per month if they have a team work together and real abuse the car. If you count in the depression and other expense, it is a so so business.
In order to drive in China, one must go to special trainning school. Ordinary US or international driver's license is invalid in China. The dream of many people will go to China to rent a car is just a joke. Majority people in Hongkong never own a car in their life (true they have a very high per capita income, but what about their living standard? any one heard that two bed room apt. in HK is $3000/Month?). They will not allowed to drive in China, it is as simple as that. Just think it for a second, if the operation is so rossie as the promoter of this stock printed, what Hertz is waiting for (I am sure Chinese Gov. would like to see them on board than some unheard of Mr. Wu)? They probably will move their headquarter to downtown Beijing :)...
