Thomson multimedia offers "An Extraordinary Journey" of home entertainment at Berlin Electronics Expo

Stunning Plasma Displays, Hard Drive mp3 Jukebox, UDR Digital Video Recorder, and TAK Interactive TV Showcase Breadth of Consumer Interest in New Technologies

Berlin, Germany -- August 25, 2001 - Next-generation giant 61-inch plasma displays, the expansion of integrated interactive television services to Germany, new digital mp3 and video recording products, and widescreen television receivers with integrated DVD players are among the innovations and new product offerings from Thomson multimedia (Paris Euroclear: 18453) (NYSE: TMS) showcased at this year's Internationale Funkausstellung, Europe's largest and most influential electronics exposition that is now underway in Berlin.

Thomson multimedia, provider of a wide range of video and enabling technologies, systems, and finished products and services to consumers and professionals in the entertainment and media industries, is displaying new lines of THOMSON products that will be marketed throughout Europe. Thomson is showcasing its new advanced product offerings under the theme "An Extraordinary Journey" at IFA Messe Berlin Hall 21, through September 2.

THOMSON Wysius: Plasma Power and Digital Storage Solutions

Thomson's Wysius next-generation line of Plasma displays, available in 42-inch, 50-inch, and 61-inch models, are now slimmer and lighter than ever and respond to growing consumer demand for television that you can literally hang on a wall. In addition to plasma, the new THOMSON Wysius line of monitors now includes two LCD screens – including an innovative LCD/DVD combination unit. For easy time shift recording, Thomson will offer the hard-disc Wysius UDR (Unlimited Digital Recorder) with 40 hours of TV recording capability in a convenient set-top device. The Wysius UDR can store TV programming and up to 8,000 digital photographs, and includes an electronic programme guide and the ability to initiate program recording remotely through a telephone connection.

THOMSON Scenium: Expansion of Integrated Products

The THOMSON Scenium home theatre line expands to include a new widescreen 36-inch TV/DVD combination television, a combination 200-watt home cinema amplifier with integrated DVD player and five speakers, a new DVD player with "Scene Again" and mp3 playback functions, and two new big-screen projection televisions. Exclusive to the Scenium line of television receivers are the colour Clip-On frames that allow consumers to customize the home theatre screen to match their home decor with one of seven different colours.

THOMSON TAK: Interactive TV

Building on the successful launch of the interactive TAK service and TV product line in France, Thomson will launch ADSL-ready TAK products and services (in conjunction with broadcasters) throughout Germany in early 2002. With TAK, Thomson is re-defining the television of today by providing full interactive services built right into the TV. With a TAK-equipped TV receiver, the viewer can easily (and without the cost of a subscription) interact and play along with programmes, display a TV programme guide, send and receive e-mails, and take advantage of personalised information and entertainment services sent by broadcasters.

THOMSON Lyra: Hard-disc mp3 Personal Jukebox

The first THOMSON product ready to take full advantage of mp3PRO, the enhanced version of the mp3 music compression format that doubles the amount of music in memory and improves the audio quality of compressed music files, will be the new LYRA Personal Jukebox (PDP 2800), a portable mp3 player with a 10GB hard-disc drive that will hold hundreds of albums, thousands of songs, and can even be used as a remote hard drive to backup data files for the computer. The LYRA Personal Jukebox will play mp3 files and will be mp3PRO-ready. Additionally, Thomson is offering a variety of flash-based mp3 players and a a personal CD player and five-disc digital minisystem that permit playback of mp3-encoded compact discs (created by computer.) THOMSON Life: Portable Lifestyle Entertainment Products The materials, shapes, palette of colours, and features of Thomson's Life range make this line of portable entertainment products ideal for all parts of the home. Small and portable, the Thomson Life products are objects of desire for consumers. At IFA, Thomson is launching its first 36cm TV/DVD combination unit and is expanding its line of 25cm and 36cm colour television receivers that are water and grease resistant (and come in attractive colours that are perfect for the kitchen.)

World's Smallest Camcorder

Thomson is unveiling a new line of digital camcorder products, combining the best technology with innovative design. The big newsmaker in miniature camcorders is the Thomson VMD 270 – the world's smallest camcorder, and an ideal miniature camcorder for professionals. Comparable in size to a compact camera (43cm x 115cm x 80cm), the VMD 270 utilizes the mini-DV format, weighs only 340g, and slips easily into a bag or jacket pocket.
