hdl ...

Corel software will work with any version of Windows that I've tried....

and I doubt if software conflict caused the previous computer to crash .. but of course, anything IS possible....

I know NOTHING about AOL ... I mean zero ... have never even looked at a box that had an AOL screen displayed, so I can't tell you anything about that portion of your question/comment ...
however,
one thing I've had great success with ...matter of fact I have the capability on all the six computers (except the newest Dell P4) in my house ..
is
removable hard drives.

My grand kids come to visit .. and of course they both want on machines and go heavens knows where on the net ...gggg

so to forestall any difficulties from areas they went causing me problems on my machines ... I rigged them both up with their own drives on their machines at their home ...
and when they come to visit, they bring their own HDs with them .....
out slides the my HD and in slides theirs ... pretty neat ..
and I've found it very handy to have for me too ....

This is the one I use ....
compgeeks.com

it is mostly plastic, and there are ones on the market which I feel sure are more sturdy ...
but I've been pleased with the performance of these for the couple of years I've been using them.
and I get NO money for pushing them ..gggg

I will necessitate buying an additional HD for your son, though ....

good luck
