I have stored it for quick reference.

But let's talk some more about values.

So we do care somewhat about who is behind the door. We don't want anyone really horrible there, even if they might do some good, because of the bad they could do by becoming powerful with their small acts of goodness. Rather like a dictator handing out money to the poor. That is a Good Thing- but not if it softens them up for a regime that will last for decades and result in the deaths of multitudes.

So good works, good values- they are hard to pin down. What is good? Why don't we start with that.

We decided that civility was good. Or at least it is better than nothing. But you and I would both agree that civil Nazis are not exactly what we had in mind.

So what do WE want? Let's see what you and I can agree on.

I like the idea of helping others. I like the idea of politeness. I like the idea of working hard- but not so hard you don't have time to enjoy life and cultivate your mind. I like the idea of education. But I do not like the idea of acceptance where cruelty is involved. Although I love the idea of acceptance, it has to stop there. Because my compassion for victims overcomes my compassion for perpetrators. That's a start.
