The economy and the stock markets face a long road to recovery

Don't let the rate cuts fool you. The U.S. economy is in far worse condition than a little tinkering with the money supply can fix, or so says Leo Hindery. Best known for leading the resuscitation of Tele-Communications Inc. and engineering the cable giant's $59 billion sale to AT&T, Hindery was among the first to forecast the decline of the telecom industry. He delivered speeches early this year warning of too many players and too much capacity in the industry -- before stock prices melted. Today Hindery remains dour. He's concerned that overcapacity in everything from telecom and technology to manufacturing and high-end real estate will continue to dampen economic growth despite the Federal Reserve's best efforts.
