Still, this requires some pretty heavy-duty routers. :)

They do a number of things to minimize the bandwidth needed out to the Internet. They use proxy servers (optional, though with some other cable modem services they are mandatory). Someone I know who works at a local ISP says that using a proxy server typically reduces web traffic by 30%.

And FTP proxy is a HUGE win, since all those Netscape, MSIE, etc. downloaded wind-up being serviced from a local hard disk after the first one. (So, you and 250 of your neighbors decide to download the latest Netscape with the bug fix - @Home fetches it from Netscape once, and stores it on their hard disk.

Of course, the router/network bandwidth problems also exist for non cable-modem solutions.
