Had a problem Friday I worked my way out of, but am wondering why it happened and how to prevent it happening again.
Had all my files for the trial Monday in one directory. Decided to copy them to floppy to take home in case I wanted to work on them and to have a backup copy. Backup copies are good, right?.
In Explore (Win 98) marked all the files, moused them over top of the A drive, saw the + sign meaning it was supposed to copy them on to A but not cut them from C, released the mouse button.
Oops.
All files disappeared from C. None showed up on A.
Gone from BOTH places.
A wee bit of panic -- all my work of about a week down the tubes. Trial brief, proposed orders, everything.
After screaming, and popping and reinserting the A diskette several times, and lots of other things, I finally went to Norton and was able find the five files listed with spool in their names. I didn't look at the full file names (at that point I just wanted them BACK), but undeleted them.
Then, of course, I still had a bit (stating it mildly) of panic because they were now gone from the recycle bin, but still didn't show up on my A floppy or my C directory.
Finally after screaming and cursing some more, I discovered them on the desktop. Why there, i don't know. But I finally copied them both onto the floppy and back where they belonged.
So I was safe. BUT, now I am more than a bit paranoid, because how can you back your system up safely if your files can disappear in the middle of making a backup copy???
So. Does anybody know how it is that files can disappear like that while being copied from a hard disk to a floppy, and how you prevent it from happening in future?? |
