In the end, it is a question of attitudes. If people see divorce as failure, and will go the extra mile to avoid it, there will be less divorce. If people see parenthood as their most important secular commitment, then they will put up with more in order to provide a stable environment in which to grow up. I would go so far as to say that someone who has not been in a sustained marriage, or raised children, has difficulty being fully emotionally mature and morally developed. There are few, if any, substitutes for the kind of responsibility to and for others entailed in marriage and parenthood. Of course, many people treat marriage and parenthood cavalierly, and therefore fail to grow. But for those who dedicate themselves to these relationships, they are among the most formative experiences that one can have..........
