Taiwan's UMC reveals $18.5 billion fab expansion plan

By Mark LaPedus

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) here today announced a massive, $18.5 billion fab expansion plan, including a move to build five 300-mm plants.

The plan calls for the Hsinchu-based company to build one 8-inch wafer fab by 1999, as well as five new 300-mm wafer -processing facilities over the next 10 years. The new fabs will be situated in the new science park in the southern Taiwan city of Tainan, according to John Hsuan, president of UMC, which is one of the world's largest silicon foundry companies.

UMC's new 8-inch (200-mm)wafer fab is slated to begin construction by early 1998. It will fabricate semiconductors with 0.16- to 0.18-micron technology and will be capable of processing 50,000 wafers per month. The company did not disclose an exact timetable for its planned 300-mm wafer fabs, however.

Other Taiwan chip makers are also rushing to build fabs in the so-called Tainan Science-Based Industrial Park, including Mosel-Vitelic Inc., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) and Winbond Electronics Corp.
