WB - RE: "I'm thinking that just as long as it is around 50% faster and scales reasonably well, it has a good chance competing against Sun and turning out a positive NPV."

Well, Itanium vs. USIII isn't like P4 vs. Athlon... Apparently OEMs don't like it if you come out with too many speeds too fast for server processors so scaling isn't as important, unless performance sucks I guess, but that didn't stop Sun from being so successful. Stability and ability to scale as you add more processors seems to be the big thing, which is partly Tench's job. The way I see it, the Itanium family being in high-end servers is a sure thing with the recent Compaq announcment and HP's and IBM's major backing, it's just a matter of time. Big bucks potential for Intel, especially if they can keep selling the processors for ~$4000 and ~$2000.
