Network Appliance Demonstrates Industry's First DAFS Solution for Infiniband Architecture At Intel Developer Forum
biz.yahoo.com
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2001--Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTAP - news), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content delivery solutions, is demonstrating for the first time Direct Access File System (DAFS) using the InfiniBand I/O subsystem as the transport for NetApp® storage solutions.

This technology demonstration showcases the power and performance the two technologies can deliver, providing high availability, scalability, and performance at a low total cost of ownership. Network Appliance is the first to showcase the DAFS protocol and the InfiniBand server I/O architecture in a storage deployment. It demonstrates the continued collaboration between Network Appliance and Intel and shows what is possible with next-generation server architecture for storage networking. InfiniBand and DAFS will enable powerful new applications and solutions for customers.

The combination of InfiniBand architecture's low-latency, standards-based I/O interconnect technology with efficient DAFS file-based storage protocol is a potent combination for remote storage communication. This demonstration will be the first time the industry will be able to see a working model of what these two technologies can accomplish,`` said Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing for Intel's Enterprise Platform Group. ''We look forward to seeing the promise of these two complementary technologies delivered.``

``Network Appliance is committed to delivering highly available, scalable, high-performance Center-to-Edge(TM) solutions at a low total cost of ownership,'' Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing at Network Appliance, noted. ``Collaborating with industry leaders including Intel and QLogic and actively participating in the use of the InfiniBand I/O subsystem and the protocol developments like DAFS ensure we are delivering the right solutions for the next generation of storage networking.''

Network Appliance and Intel are both active members of the DAFS Collaborative, an industry group established to specify and promote a new protocol for high-performance shared file access in data center environments. The DAFS protocol is poised to utilize remote memory-to-memory interconnect technologies such as the InfiniBand architecture in data center environments. Network Appliance(TM) storage solutions will use DAFS to increase performance, scalability, reliability, and availability.

The demonstrations will highlight the DAFS protocol, NetApp storage solutions, Intel InfiniBand architecture, and QLogic InfiniBand switch technology.
