DMA,

Not necessarily. At least not in most states. It is advertised, up front, that the jackpot is an amount of money to be paid in annual installments of a certain amount of money over 25, or 30, years. If one chooses the long term option, they will receive the full amount, which they will pay considerable federal income taxes, and state income taxes, if they live in a state that has income taxes. If anyone has a problem figuring that out, they are dumb. There is nothing dishonest in what they do, anymore than someone promising you a free lunch. There ain't no such thing. Foolish people are going to be parted from their money one way, or another. A lot of foolish speculation in .com stocks is a fine example of that. Those that overloaded their portfolio with tech stocks broke a cardinal rule of investment, and got burned, but no one seems to be blaming the stock market.

You seem to show a great deal of anger against the lottery, but do not seem to be against other things that are of equal detriment to the poor, and stupid, people. Maybe someone close to you got burned. I don't know, and hope that is not so.
