What did you think of the ending?
I thought she escaped into madness.
The tearing of the yellow wallpaper I thought was the characters tearing off the constraints of duty and societal obligation, that made her feel guilt for anything contrary to her husband's wishes- and his wishes were that she not be herself. So her choice was to be herself and suffer her husband's disapproval and her guilt, or to try to be what he wanted, which seemed to me an impossible task for her. When you cannot be who you are, and cannot live with being what other people expect you to be, maybe madness makes sense?
