I agree with you.
Laws can highlight whatever they like.
Although you don't want to make thought a crime, hate crimes don't do that. It isn't THOUGHT, it is thought coupled with action. If you simply think hateful things and take no action directed at the group which you hate, no problem. Be as hate filled as you like. But I think it is important to reinforce the importance of the line between thought and action- and I believe hate crimes do that most effectively.

We should take care that they apply to all crimes- but just white crimes. It is my opinion that we want to discourage all violence motivated by race in all manners that we can. Of course we want to discourage ALL crime- but some crimes are more destructive to the fabric of our society than other crimes. If people don't believe that they need only look at the attention given to children who kill. Those crimes are more important to society than other crimes- even though they are a small percentage of the crime pie. It is the same with racially motivated crimes. And that is ok. Society has a right to choose it's focus. And people not in step with what the majority want have a right to gripe about it.
