I find it interesting that people talk about housing as being a great "investment". If one renovates a gutted house in a bad neighborhood, and the neighborhood rebounds, then the risk/reward ratio may be favorable. In most cases the real ROI is not so good (and may be negative, as you mention) when compared with other asset classes.

I don't see why people have to call their house purchase an "investment"... why can't it simply be "money well spent"?
