A republican plant:...."With the most conservative voting record of any California Democrat in Congress, Condit is a natural ally of Republicans," MSNBC noted, adding that his status as a founding member of the conservative "Blue Dog Democrats" puts him in excellent position to affect major policy initiatives

From his earliest days in the California legislature, Condit has shown a willingness to buck the Democratic party when his principles are compromised. After joining the U.S. House of Representatives in 1989, Condit has continued to be a moderate voice on key issues from balancing the federal budget to focusing on welfare reform and environmental issues.

His independence and consensus building skills have been recognized by leaders from both sides. Minority Leader Richard Gephardt appointed Condit to the Corrections Day Panel - a body charged with eliminating outdated government regulations - while former Speaker Newt Gingrich named Condit to a conference committee on unfunded mandates.
