Motion detectors for lights have existed for a while. They don't work well enough, IMO. They have a tendency to cut out when the occupant is relatively motionless (reading, typing, etc. I've even seen one cut out when a professor was standing at a podium lecturing.). Perhaps an IR-based detector would work better?

LEDs are rapidly replacing light bulbs for traffic lights, public message boards, turn signals on buses, etc.
