Little help?

In the last week or so a strange situation has developed within my PC at home. My system appears to work for 30 seconds or so...and then freeze for 5 seconds. In a continuous loop, no less. For five seconds every half minute or so, the mouse freezes, at times applications halt, and - most suspiciously - regardless of how many times I "Adjust Date/Time," I'm losing time. I defragged my disks, ran a virus scan (clean), and the problem persists.

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what the problem might be...even better, the solution?

TIA,

LPS5
