I used to love the laundromat when I was a student. I wrote a song once called the Laundromat Song.
It was written while I was getting a divorce and was about my tiny load amidst the large baskets of the big women with families. It was a blues/jazz thing:

ANd the laundry seems so small, it hardly fills the washer at all,
And all the mommas with their trouble spot loads,
Sit and compose washday odes
To tide and Fab and to each other.

While I sit with my book,
trying to hide my low-phosphate look,
my detergent box that's only
big enough for one,
I'm waiting for the dryer to be done,
and wishing for your shirts to fold,
and for your jeans to hold,
Cuz mine aren't much of an armful

Put my things in a pillow case
Wonder if I'll ever join the hamper race.
Dodging all the kids chasing laundry carts-
they belong to the ladies with the chlorox-clean hearts.
They sit and they commiserate with
Days of OUr LIves,
Did they ever have a time when they did more than survive?
BUt are we doing so much more,
despite what we think,
I wonder if this little load won't fit in a sink.

WEll it goes on- I've forgotten the rest- thankfully.
youth is wonderful, isn't it?
I would hate it now. When I was young, I could look at others so coldly somehow, now I would probably burst into tears if their underwear was big and white and raggedy-- it would be such a symbol of SOMETHING..
