I believe most motion detectors for lights are IR (since when it's dark visual detection would not be possible) but they depend on the motion of the IR source or else stationary heat sources (PCs, water heaters, for instance) would keep the lights on. Your professor just needed to be more animated. Edit: oddly enough as I write this I'm the last one in the building working late and I don't have an alarm code for the motion detecting alarm system (IR btw). So I'm stuck sitting here relatively motionless waiting for the janitorial engineer to arrive. I'm not even sure if the alarm is set but I understand it makes a very unpleasant sound so I'm not risking it. N
