Acer Laboratories Unveils Pentium 4 Chipset

WSJ

Chip designer Acer Laboratories Inc. Tuesday unveiled its new ALADDiN-P4 chipset. The chipset allows Pentium 4 microprocessors manufactured by Intel Corp. to be used with industry-standard synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) chips and high-performance Double-Data Rate (DDR) chips. ALi will begin volume production of the chipset, which will be priced at US$31 in large quantities, in October, it said in a press release. The Taiwan company secured a license from Intel in February to make the Pentium 4-compatible chipset. A chipset enables the microprocessor, or the brains of a personal computer, to communicate with the rest of the PC. The announcement comes after rivals Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. and VIA Technologies Inc. earlier this month launched their own Pentium 4-compatible chipsets.
