I was having a lot of computer trouble once, and a nice techie went through all the installed software with me, saying "get rid of that, get rid of that, get rid of that...." He said to think of the computer as a garage, and all the superfluous/redundant software as idling like an engine, filling up the garage with fumes. It did solve my problem, too.
