Newmont Mining Corporation (ticker: NEM, exchange: New York Stock Exchange) News Release - 8/29/2001
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Slope Movement Occurs at Nevada Mine
DENVER, Aug 29, 2001 /PRNewswire/ -- Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM) has temporarily halted production in the Deep Post underground mine in Nevada following a slope movement on the south wall of the Betze-Post pit. Newmont and Barrick Goldstrike, operator of the Betze-Post pit, have been jointly monitoring the final pit wall over the last several months. After assessing the situation, Deep Post, located within the Betze-Post pit, was evacuated at 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning and the main impact of the movement occurred thereafter. There were no injuries as a result. There was some impact to equipment owned by a Newmont contractor, as well as a temporary loss of power that has been fully restored. In addition, the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the Nevada State Mine Inspector's Office have been notified.
The Deep Post underground mine portal is located on the south end of the pit and was not impacted. Reserves at Deep Post were unaffected. A section of the south access road was impacted. There is a second, north access road into the pit.
The mine remains closed until federal and state inspectors have completed their investigation. The halt in production is expected to last several days. The mine currently produces approximately 1,000 ounces of gold per day.
