"...About 2,000 youth gangs are active in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, according to law enforcement sources in these countries. Their combined membership is estimated at about 400,000 youths, mainly males between 12 and 24 years of age. In Honduras, for example, police have confirmed the existence of 489 youth gangs, and in Guatemala, there are more than 500 youth gangs with more than 100,000 active known members.

Many of these gangs, or "maras," as they are called in the region, are led by youths and adults who belonged to gangs in the United States but were convicted of felonies and deported back to Central America. Many gangs, such as El Salvador's feared Mara Salvatrucha, also have branches in major U.S. cities, engage in drug and arms trafficking and carry out contract murders for Mexican and Colombian drug organizations.
